4 Reasons To Get Your BASSET Card Before You Apply For A Job

Are you looking for a job selling or serving alcohol in Illinois? If so, then you’ll need an On-Premise or Off-Premise BASSET certification. In fact, it’s now a legal requirement throughout the state of Illinois. As of July 1, 2018, all on-premise alcohol servers, and those required to check identification for alcohol service, are mandated to take a BASSET certification course.

But why should you get your BASSET certification before getting hired? Why not wait until you secure the job? Here are 4 reasons:

You’ll get credibility

By showing up with your BASSET card in hand, you’ll show your prospective employer you know the business (whether you really do or not). The law requires BASSET certification, and having your BASSET card will show an employer you know that. You’ll be more legit.

You’ll be at an advantage compared to other applicants

If you were the one hiring, would you prefer someone already BASSET certified, or someone who waited for you to tell them they need to get certified? Don’t forget that having your BASSET card helps your employer meet their legal duty. As an applicant, it shows that you care about their establishment and will take your job seriously. Not only do you have the knowledge they need you to have, you have that magic piece of paper that will legally protect them.

You’ll know what you’re in for

On the subject of legal liabilities, getting your certification ahead of time will help you be sure you really want to take on the responsibility that comes with serving alcohol. Although anyone trained by BASSET On The Fly is well prepared and need not fear, you may decide it’s not for you. Better to know your legal obligations from day one than to be unpleasantly surprised after you’ve already started.

You’ll hit the ground running

Even if you could start work before your certification is complete, it wouldn’t be the best idea, for your own or the public’s sake. Why wait for your new employer to tell you to get BASSET certified? Why not be ready to serve the moment you start? As a restaurant general manager, I interviewed and hired countless servers and bartenders who had their start date delayed by a day or two because they weren’t certified at the time of hiring. Don’t be that person. If you go to your interview with a BASSET certification, it’ll show your employer that you’re invested in making the process as quick and efficient as possible, and it’ll fast track your ability to start making money.

BASSET On The Fly’s online BASSET course is only $12.99 and completely self-paced. That means there’s no course timer prohibiting you from moving forward. You can proceed through the material as fast as you’d like. That’s a small price to pay to give yourself a leg up when applying for jobs.
